Dear Speaker Menin & the New York City Council,

Every worker in New York City deserves the same right to safe and dignified working conditions.

But companies like Amazon keep trying to skirt the law by hiring subcontractors disingenuously, even though the way they manage their subcontractors clearly shows that they should be classified as employees. For example, workers are forced to wear Amazon vests, are told where to run their routes by Amazon, and Amazon has the power to set hiring and firing terms. And yet, companies like Amazon aren’t responsible for their safety, don't have to offer sick days, and get to offload expenses.

Billion dollar corporations are making huge profits at the expense of their workers. That’s not fair. We urge you to back hardworking New York City delivery drivers and pass the Delivery Protection Act.

The fact is, giving delivery drivers labor rights shouldn’t cost customers a penny. Enormous companies like Amazon could absorb the marginal cost of offering their workers the rights they deserve without raising costs on consumers. But companies like Amazon are fearmongering to try to pit New Yorkers against each other. We all lose if we let companies do that.

It’s time to give the thousands of delivery drivers in New York the same rights that other New York City workers enjoy. It’s time to pass the Delivery Protection Act.
