Open Letter - It’s Time for a Fair Deal That Puts Workers and Services First

Squamish Council & CAO Linda Glenday

CUPE 2269 members are the workers who keep the community running - from teaching kids to swim to maintaining our parks, supporting the RCMP, keeping City Hall operating, and making sure there’s clean water when you turn on the tap.

It’s time for the District of Squamish Council and senior managers to fix the chaos they’ve created and get the services our community depends on back on track. We need the District of Squamish to negotiate a fair contract with their workers that supports both quality public services and the people who provide them.

Because investing in workers is investing in the services our community relies on every day.

As elected representatives and the senior leadership in Squamish, you have the ability to put our community back on track. It is disappointing to see that you have chosen to lockout workers and indefinitely stop services, rather than work towards a resolution.

The people who keep the District running smoothly, showing up every day to deliver services that keep our communities safe, taking care of infrastructure, water and waste, and maintaining our parks and recreation deserve respect and fairness at work. Workers deserve to be able to afford the everyday basics, and residents deserve long term stability of the public services they rely on.

Our community is counting on you to show leadership and fix the chaos you’ve created.

Our youth desperately need access to the Rec Centre, the community needs the landfill operating and public washrooms open, and seniors need the programs and spaces that help them stay active and connected. Every part of our community is being affected by this disruption and it’s time to bring stability back to Squamish.

As community members who use local facilities, raise families here, and care about the wellbeing of our neighbours, we’re asking you to take responsibility and help get Squamish’s services back on track.

We are calling on you to meaningfully negotiate with workers and find a fair resolution that supports the community services we all depend on, and the workers who deliver these services.

Let’s make sure Squamish has the long-term, stable services our community needs.
