OSU, Drop Flock: Call on OSU leaders to drop their contracts with ICE corporate enabler Flock

OSU President Ravi Bellamkonda

Join the call on OSU leaders to drop their contract with Flock Safety.

Flock Safety is a private surveillance company that installs automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras throughout our communities. These cameras do not solely target suspected criminal activity; they collect data on every vehicle that passes, recording license plate numbers, timestamps, locations, and even distinguishing features such as bumper stickers or dents. Flock claims that its data is controlled exclusively by local law enforcement and not shared directly with ICE. However, according to a Flock ICE statement, “Newly obtained audit logs show more than 1,400 searches were done on behalf of ICE in Colorado since June 2024.” This raises serious concerns about how surveillance infrastructure on campus could be used to amplify deportations and further harm immigrant communities. Despite the growing risks to community safety, the expansion of Flock’s surveillance network continues.

OSU has more than 60 Flock license plate readers on or near campus. You can see where some of them are located here: https://deflock.org/map#map=16/40.001270/-83.014305

We students, faculty, staff, and allies are appalled by ICE’s trampling upon the human rights of communities across our country. And we refuse to stand by as our school is bound up with this assault by doing business with corporations that are pivotal to ICE’s operations, like Flock Safety, which gives ICE access to its surveillance data.

Every person in our community and city deserves to feel safe and liberated. Yet holding contracts with Flock Safety does not reflect that. Flock systems can be used to facilitate raids, surveillance, and deportations that separate families. Reports show that ALPR data has been accessed in support of federal immigration enforcement, creating the potential for systems on campus to contribute to deportation efforts and the targeting of immigrant communities. This directly affects the community as ICE continues to invoke fear with its aggressive and violent tactics. The use of Flock aids in increasing the risk of harm to vulnerable communities. True public safety is derived from accountability.

We call on you to cut all ties with Flock. Our tuition money and our college should not be funding an operation that runs so counter to our core values and that directly threatens so many members of our campus community. Breaking our relationship with Flock is a powerful way to join Americans across the country in refusing to condone ICE’s campaign of terror in our communities.
