Our Forests Aren't Fuel
Dear Governor Deal and Mayor Denson,
We, the undersigned, living in and near Athens, GA, implore you to refuse to grant any form of subsidy to the woody biomass energy industry in Georgia.
Our standing forests gather and store carbon, which makes them a key solution for carbon pollution. Despite the fact that deforestation is the third largest cause of carbon pollution just behind cars and power plants, European policy makers are promoting the burning of Southern forests for electricity to meet their “clean energy” targets. This is not clean energy -- wood releases more CO2 pollution at the point of incineration than does coal. We must oppose this destructive and dirty form of energy while implementing truly green and sustainable energy, which is in our reach with wind and solar.
