Pass the SOGIE Equality Law Now!

Senate President Chiz Escudero and Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino

People protesting to pass the SOGIE Equality Bill

We urge Senate President Chiz Escudero and Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino and all members of the Philippine Senate and House of Representatives to stop delaying equality and pass the SOGIE Equality Law.

Many LGBTQIA+ individuals–Filipinos with diverse Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE)–are struggling against discrimination every day. Daily injustices that span from side-eyes, tasteless jokes, and misgendering to being denied access to social services and adequate healthcare, gatekept from jobs and learning opportunities, subjected to harassment and violence from their own communities, and deprived of means and mechanisms to demand accountability.

It is the duty of the state to protect every citizen from any acts of discrimination based on SOGIE and to safeguard the fundamental right of every citizen to be free from unfair treatment, which includes the following:

  • Denial of access to public service, with special mention of military service

  • Termination of employee or rejection of job applicant

  • Denial of admission to, expulsion from, or discipline of a student by an educational institution

  • Denial of access to medical and health services

  • Denial of application or revocation of professional license

  • Denial of access to establishments, facilities, utilities, services, or housing

  • Forced medical or psychological examination to determine and/or alter a person's SOGIE without his or her consent

  • Harassment by the police or military

  • Any other analogous acts that impair or nullify the enjoyment, recognition, or exercise of a person’s rights and freedoms
