Two climate disclosure bills that are now before the California Assembly will be game-changers for the state and the nation's efforts to staunch climate change—if we can pass them both, together. Scroll down to read the petition.

Please sign on! These bills must pass, and pass together!

SB 261 (Stern), Greenhouse gases: climate-related financial risk will require companies doing more than $500 million in annual revenue to disclose their risk according to the global disclosure standard. This information, made public each year, will inform investors around the country and the world about the prudence of investing in banks and companies contributing to climate chaos.

SB 253 (Wiener), the Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act, requires companies doing more than $1billion in revenues to report all of their associated emissions, including "Scope 3" emissions from products that are sold and used by consumers (think about Exxon's gas stations).

Both bills provide for civil penalties for non-compliance or inaccurate reports.

Sign the petition! Tell the Legislature and Governor Newsom
we need BOTH these bills passed and signed

Passed together, these two bills will pave the way for the federal Securities and Exchange Commission to finalize federal disclosure regulations, now under scathing attack from oil and gas interests (see below).

Both bills have passed the State Senate and are now awaiting floor votes in the Assembly. It's going to be close, as oil and gas and the usual "business interests" are working hard to defeat them. All the voting will be over by the end of Friday, September 14—and then it's on to Governor Newsom.

We have our work cut out for us— to make sure ALL of our Assembly members know how important these bills are to their constituents, which is us, and finally to tell the Governor that California and the nation need him to sign.

As a proponents of strong climate action by California and at the national level, we the undersigned urge you to approve both SB 261 (Stern), Greenhouse gases: Climate-related financial risk; and SB 253 ( Wiener), the Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act.

We view these bills as two halves of a game-changing whole for our economy. Passed in tandem, they will provide essential data to investors, financial planners, consumers, and the concerned public around the nation as companies doing business in California adapt—as they must—to the realities and financial risks of global heating, and transition away from fossil fuels.

Governor Newsom, we are counting on you to sign SB 253 and SB 261 into law as quickly as possible. The nation and the world need California's leadership on climate!
