Why are workers demanding the Recall of AEA Executive Vice Chair Bryan Lunn?

The AEA is not a trade union. Section 215(2) of the Canada Labour Code (“CLC”) states that “Where no redundant employees are represented by a trade union, the employees are entitled to appoint all the members of a joint planning committee who are to be their representatives.”

 Section 215(4) specifies that “(4) Each person appointed as a member of a joint planning committee pursuant to subsection (2) or paragraph (3)(b) shall be elected by the redundant employees entitled to appoint the member.”

AEA Executive Vice Chair Bryan Lunn has actively worked against efforts by workers to elect their own JPC representatives. Mr. Lunn has misled workers about the JPC process. In response to worker pushback he has stated that a Minister of Labour Inspector was “appointed to [AEA’s] JPC from the government and our process and selections were vetted through him.” Recently an official from the Minister of Labour confirmed that in fact the Inspector “did not vet nor approve that process; and that [the Inspector] was not present at, nor has approved of any Joint Planning Committee processes.”

Mr. Lunn was the Co-Chair of the Tier 1 JPC. Through that process Mr. Lunn and the AEA purported to sign away all legal entitlements of workers in exchange for low severance and small flight benefits.

Now Mr. Lunn is heading the Tier 2 JPC. He is actively disregarding workers’ requests to be able to elect their own representatives. He is not independent from WestJet and he is not fairly representing workers.
