Please make Foster City streets safer, especially for kids who walk and bike
Mayor Art Kiesel and Foster City Council
The past few weeks have been deadly on the streets of Foster City, especially for those who walk or bike. We have seen one fatality and several other pedestrians and cyclists have been injured. Here are a few of the recent tragedies:
- November - a driver hit and killed Varun Sharma in front of Costco
- December - a driver hit and injured a pedestrian AND a child on bike while exiting the Harbor Cove Apartments on Edgewater
- November - a driver hit and injured a teen on an e-bike near Bowditch Middle School
- November - a driver sped through a backyard fence and crashed into a home on Thatcher Lane
Please sign our petition to the City Council, asking them to take immediate action to prevent future tragedies on the streets of Foster City.

Dear Mayor Kiesel and Foster City Council,
I am writing to ask that the City of Foster City make our streets safer. In recent weeks, one pedestrian has died and numerous people on foot and bike, including children, have been hit and injured. This is unacceptable for a City that touts public safety as one of its strategic priorities. Foster City residents and visitors should be able to get around safely without a car if we are serious about reducing auto congestion, improving quality of life, helping the environment, and increasing property values.
Please:
- Triple spending on safe streets infrastructure projects - infrastructure is the most effective means of making streets safer for those who don't drive
- Double traffic safety staffing in the Foster City Police Department; currently, drivers flout speeding and distracted driving laws with little fear of ticketing
- Establish a quick-build request and implementation process that provides rapid, low cost infrastructure improvements upon resident request
- Increase visibility at intersections and around driveways
- Lower speed limits around schools and other areas where children play
- Create a bicycle & pedestrian advisory committee that provides residents with a forum to provide input on critical safety improvements
Thank you for your help in making the streets of Foster City safer for all residents.
