UNSW Students: Pledge support for university staff

Professor Ian Jacobs, University Council President and Vice-Chancellor, UNSW

UNSW Vice Chancellor Ian Jacobs and other university executives are forcing through changes which will create poorer teaching conditions for staff, which means poorer learning conditions for students. Students and staff are essential to the operation of the university, so we have the power to push back against these changes. Take the pledge to stand for a fair deal for our staff!

Our staff are currently fighting for the future of their conditions and pay with the university through the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA), a contract that sets out terms for childcare, leave, and sick pay. But the university isn’t playing nice. Our staff are being asked by our Vice Chancellor, Ian Jacobs, to work harder, for longer, for less. More than 230 employees have lost their jobs in the last year, centralising administrative services that means less tailored assistance for staff and students. Trimesters will mean that teachers and non-academic staff will be working longer and harder for the same pay, reducing our quality of learning. Our teaching and learning conditions are on the line.

Students and staff, the lifeblood of the university, have the opportunity to show management that we won’t stand for lower standards. If students stand with staff to oppose these changes to conditions, we can ensure that the university gives us all a fair deal on the accessibility and quality of our education.

Take the pledge to stand with staff to fight for a fair deal for pay and conditions over the next four years. By doing so, you will show our Vice-Chancellor that students are willing to stand up for teaching and learning conditions at UNSW, and demand that the university become more accountable to its students and staff.

Who are we?

Rebuild25 UNSW is a group of students looking to make university accessible, transparent, and accountable by 2025. This semester, we’re throwing our weight behind our teachers to keep the quality of our education high and equitable. Check out our Facebook page for more information.

I pledge to support the staff and the staff union throughout their Enterprise Bargaining Agreement period, and urge Ian Jacobs to agree to staff demands for a safe workplace. I will stand with staff if they deem the agreement to be insufficient.
