“Closing Democracy’s Window,” a report from Open the Government, draws attention to the growth in secrecy that hinders the people's right to know.
Under the current administration, we have witnessed a rapid erosion of openness, the crumbling of norms, frequent and ongoing disparagement of the media, efforts to stonewall information requests, manipulation of data, and outright suppression of facts.
The lack of transparency and the weakening ability of Congress to serve as an effective watchdog are coming at a time when the government is gaining incredible means to track citizens through the deployment of artificial intelligence and facial recognition software.
Agencies including the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security (including ICE), and the FBI are increasingly using these technologies to track Americans. And, as they contract with private technology firms to provide the technology to conduct surveillance, these activities often-times fall beyond the scope of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and beyond the reach of any existing oversight because they are being implemented by private companies.
There is no time to waste. We must build a national coalition to fight for comprehensive legislative safeguards to protect our privacy rights and prevent the further erosion of transparency and the rule of law. Add your name. Demand Congress introduce and pass legislation to reverse these damaging trends.

It is imperative that Congress act swiftly to restore the public’s trust in our institutions by increasing checks and balances in our democracy and developing comprehensive reforms to ensure artificial intelligence, facial recognition, and other emerging technologies are not used without oversight, transparency, or contrary to our privacy rights.
