Protect Our Care – OSU Must Do More

Jay Anderson, Chief Operating Officer, Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center

Hospitals should be places of healing. But at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, staff and patients are being left vulnerable to violence, fear, and trauma.

After repeated warnings, OSUWMC has finally committed to installing metal detectors at some entrances. But this partial solution leaves a critical gap: the Emergency Department EMS entrance remains unprotected. Armed individuals are still entering our hospital. A PERRP complaint has been filed because OSUWMC allows up to 30 minutes before security responds. In an emergency department, 30 minutes can be the difference between life and death.

This is not just about one doorway—it’s about the safety and future of the entire hospital.

We are calling on OSUWMC to take immediate, meaningful action to protect nurses, health professionals, patients, and our community:

  • Close the security gap at the EMS entrance.
  • Station trained security at all hospital access points.
  • Implement immediate threat response protocols—not dangerous delays.

And beyond security measures—we demand a fair contract that delivers real solutions:

  • Protections against workplace violence
  • Safe staffing to ensure quality care
  • Fair compensation to retain and recruit the skilled professionals our community relies on.

Without these guarantees, we don’t have a hospital—we have a pressure cooker. A place where fear replaces focus, where caregivers are pushed to the brink, and where tragedy becomes inevitable.

We don’t want reactionary fixes after someone gets hurt. We want a safe, sustainable hospital—not a warzone with a traumatized care team.

OSUWMC must act now. Protect your staff. Protect your patients. Do the right thing.

Sign and share to demand immediate action for safety, staffing, and a contract that reflects the value of care.
