No one doubts that the state of North Dakota is in a budget crisis, but slashing the notice given to tenured faculty who are being let go, from 12 months to 90 days, follows a troubling pattern in Bismarck of attempting to balance the budget on the backs of educators and public employees.

We ask that the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education reverse course on a proposed rule change to Policy 605.3, and to retain the 12-month notification period required in order to terminate the appointment of tenured faculty.
Our tenure system in higher education is a core value to the free exchange of ideas in academia, both on and off campus. The 12-month notice is a central tenet of tenure in North Dakota higher education, and should remain standing.
