Protect Our Water: Tell Trump’s EPA To Not Delay Closing Coal Ash Ponds
United States Environmental Protection Agency
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing to further delay the closure deadlines for coal ash ponds and allow dirty power plants creating the coal ash to continue operating past their planned retirement dates. These unlined coal ash ponds are known to leak toxic pollutants – such as arsenic, lead, mercury – into our surrounding groundwater.
This rule is open for public comment. Join us in leaving a comment and tell EPA NO DELAYS. It’s past time we protect communities from these dangerous coal plants and their toxic coal ash.

Dear EPA,
I strongly oppose the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) proposal to delay the closure deadlines for coal ash ponds and the power plants that require them. Allowing these dirty power plants to continue polluting our communities is a danger to our health, our water, and the environment.
For decades, utilities disposed of coal ash – the hazardous substance left after burning coal for energy – by dumping it in unlined ponds and landfills. Across the US, coal ash dump sites are leaking dangerous levels of toxic pollutants into our soil and groundwater. Pollutants that have been linked to cancer, heart and thyroid disease, reproductive failure, and neurological harm. Coal ash is disproportionately located in low-income communities and communities of color.
The longer we fail to take action to control toxic coal ash, the more toxic power plant waste enters our groundwater, and the more difficult cleanup becomes. I want clean air to breathe, safe water to drink, and a healthy future for the next generation. We need strong standards to clean up coal ash.
I urge the EPA to revoke this terrible and dangerous proposal.
