Pull the welfare bill and start again

Liz Kendall MP, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions

The government's changes to the welfare bill do not go far enough and in fact will create a two-tier welfare system.

It is clear that the law is being rushed through without proper care, consideration or consultation.

The government should pull the bill and start again, putting the principles of social justice and getting people back into work at its heart.

The Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Bill is being rushed through without proper care, consideration or consultation.

The changes you have proposed do not go far enough and will create further injustice by creating a two-tier welfare system.

Assurances to disabled people about consultation are not strong enough, and not enough time is being given for MPs to consider and scrutinise the bill.

Your government must pull the bill and start again - with the principles of social justice and getting people back into work at its heart. Labour should not be cutting sickness and disability support in order to balance the books.
