Reappoint Inspector General Ed Harness

Louisville Metro Council & Mayor Craig Greenberg

We need Ed Harness to be reappointed for a second term as Inspector General. In 2021, following the killing of Breonna Taylor by LMPD, Harness was unanimously approved by Metro Council to lead the newly created Office of Inspector General because of his rare combination of qualifications: attorney, former police officer, and proven police reformer and civilian oversight system builder. Harness' contract is up this November and it is up to Mayor Craig Greenberg to reappoint him, subject to the approval of Louisville Metro Council.

We support the reappointment of Ed Harness as Inspector General of Louisville Metro Police Department and we join Louisville's Civilian Review and Accountability Board, the People's Consent Decree Coalition, the Louisville NAACP, the Louisville Urban League, Louisville Showing Up for Racial Justice (LSURJ), Vocal-KY, Kentucky Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, and other Louisville organizations in calling upon Mayor Greenberg to reappoint Inspector General Harness for a second term.

The Office of Inspector General was created after the devastating killing of Breonna Taylor and repeated breaches of the public trust, to restore confidence, to provide independent oversight, and to hold LMPD accountable.

Since his appointment, Ed Harness has advanced accountability with fairness, integrity, and collaboration - working with LMPD, the Civilian Review and Accountability Board, and the broader community.

Stable leadership is essential. Replacing Inspector General Harness now would risk undermining police reform and damaging public trust.

Mayor Greenberg - the people of Louisville urge you to do the right thing - reappoint Ed Harness for a second term.
