On July 19, 2015, a white University of Cincinnati Police Officer, Ray Tensing, shot and killed Sam DuBose, a Black unarmed motorist who was pulled over for missing a front license plate. Today, a jury in Cincinnati once again declared a mistrial as they could not reach a verdict.

The hung jury resulting in a mistrial in the case of Ray Tensing serves to deepen the festering wounds of our society’s disdain for Black lives. This disdain manifests in our systems and our institutions, as well as in our interactions with each other. Irrational racial fear caused Ray Tensing to end the life of Sam DuBose. Institutionalized racism allowed him to get away with it.

The responsibility for this injustice lies not only with Officer Tensing, but also with the University of Cincinnati Police Department and the Hamilton County justice system. We demand that the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office recharge Ray Tensing with charges that will force him to consider his actions and find repentance from a jail cell.

The mistrial in the case of Ray Tensing, following on the heels of the acquittal of Philando Castile's killer in Minnesota, reinforces the fact that Black lives do not yet matter in America.

The responsibility for this injustice lies not only with Officer Tensing, but also with the University of Cincinnati Police Department and the Hamilton County justice system. We demand that your office recharge Ray Tensing with charges that will force him to be held accountable for senselessly ending the life of Sam DuBose.
