Despite the growing urgency of our inter-twined climate and public health crises, the fossil fuel industry continues their reckless expansion plans in NJ.

With this latest fossil fuel project, Tennessee Gas Pipeline company is proposing to expand their fracked gas pipeline through the protected Highlands region, an ecological treasure which provides more than half of our residents with clean, affordable drinking water. This would send even more fracked gas at higher pressures through an aging 65-year-old pipeline that runs through dozens of NJ communities and water bodies, all to deliver more dirty fuels to NY. The project serves no benefit for NJ and is completely antithetical with NY’s clean energy goals.

The company is applying for critical permits to the NJDEP and approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Sign on to urge Governor Murphy to instruct his DEP to reject this permit and protect the health and safety of NJ.

I'm commenting on TN Gas Pipeline (TGP) Companies application for their proposed East 300 Upgrade Project, which would expand polluting fossil fuel infrastructure in the protected Highlands region. Tennessee Gas is looking to expand their compressor station in Wantage and build a new one in West Milford. The new compressor station site in West Milford would be built in the middle of the Highlands Preserve right next to a C1 stream and above the Wanaque and Monksville reservoir.

These facilities release harmful air pollutants such as NOx, PM2.5, Sox, VOCs, HAPs such as formaldehyde, benzene, and GHG’s. A leak or accident will be detrimental to critical drinking water and to nearby communities. Chromium, benzene, and hydrocarbons can get into industrial stormwater runoff that will increase pollution and flooding. Blowdowns are also common for these facilities and when done sound very much like a jet engine. A leak or accident will be detrimental to the critical drinking water for 3 million people. Air pollution from the facility can get into industrial stormwater runoff that will increase pollution and flooding.

As a major proposed expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure, it would create serious risks and negative impacts on our water supply, public health, safety, and our environment. This is not routine maintenance or upgrade but a massive expansion of utility infrastructure that does not qualify for an exemption nor does it serve NJ residents. Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co. has a proven track record of causing destruction. They created serious problems at Lake Lookover and Bearfort Waters. Mudslides, erosion and more covered the two lakes with mud and impacted drinking wells. We ask you to reject this unnecessary project. We cannot let this company destroy our land, clean air, and water.
