No Confidence and Removal of Chancellor Gillman Due to Actions on May 15, 2024

UC Irvine Faculty Senate and UC Office of the President

View of hundreds of police officers clearing out a peaceful protest encampment at UC Irvine on May 15, 2024
KTLA News

On May 15, 2024, UC Irvine experienced an excessively violent police response to peaceful protestors. This response was based on demonstrably false reports and a failure to adhere to University of California policy by campus leadership and UC Irvine Chancellor Howard Gillman. The police involvement began with a false claim of a "violent protest," leading to an overwhelmingly large police presence to clear the peaceful student encampment in the UC Irvine Physical Sciences Plaza. Police tackled students and used batons to remove individuals from the Plaza.

These actions constitute grounds for removal of Chancellor Gillman.

This petition requests that the UC Irvine Faculty Senate vote no-confidence in Chancellor Howard Gillman, and that the UC Office of the President remove the Chancellor for egregious violations of his responsibilities, specifically:

  1. Failing to follow university policy requiring the exhausting of all possible alternatives before resorting to police intervention, and to negotiate with students occupying the Physical Sciences Lecture Hall to allow instruction to continue.

  2. Using false reports of violence to justify an overwhelming, disproportionate, and violent police response.
