Lafayette Parish Schools Superintendent Francis Touchet, Jr. is at the center of a coordinated plan to undermine the rights and access to education of working-class children in Acadiana.

Under Superintendent Touchet, Lafayette Parish Schools voted to close Comeaux High School, ignoring widespread community opposition. They plan to move the Career Center away from Northside High School and defund Northside High, denying vital resources to Lafayette’s lowest-income communities. Now, LPSS is threatening to move Lafayette’s alternative education school, LeRosen Preparatory School, fully online.

Amidst these cost-cutting measures, Superintendent Touchet received a $65,000 pay raise—which is greater than the average Lafayette teacher makes in a year. The announcement came amidst a forgery and corruption investigation of construction projects at LPSS.

Superintendent Touchet and LPSS are sacrificing working-class students and teachers for profit. Acadianans must oppose the ruling class strategy to dismantle public education in our community and across the nation. We demand Touchet’s immediate removal!

The PSL is fighting for a socialist system where working-class people are in charge of how our society is run, and quality education for people of all ages is a top priority. Socialism would bring fair salaries for all educators and learning conditions and curricula that meet students’ diverse needs. Instead of being dictated by profits for corporations or superintendents, decisions about our schools would be made by the communities they serve.

The announcement came amidst a forgery and corruption investigation of construction projects at LPSS. Independent auditors found there to be 77 issues in the use of public funds under Touchet's leadership. Educators have reported being fearful of retaliation in court and reports of retaliation from whistleblowers has been reported by auditors. Superintendent Touchet in court testified that he was unaware of the rules and procedures by which the School Board operated under. The children of our community deserve better than Touchet's leadership.

Superintendent Touchet and LPSS are sacrificing working-class students and teachers for the benefit of the rich and powerful. Acadianans oppose the ruling class strategy to dismantle public education in our community. We demand the Lafayette Parish School Board act democratically, listen to the demands of the community, and remove Francis Touchet as Superintendent of LPSS immediately.
