Reproductive Rights and Justice at KSU

Kathy Schwaig, President, Kennesaw State University

We are organizing alongside @GradAction for the #StudentStrikeOct6. Chapters across the country are planning #BansOffOurBodies strikes and protests against the ruling-class attacks on abortion and trans rights. We are fighting for: safe, legal, accessible abortions; gender-affirming care; free contraception; mandatory sex ed; and support from our schools. We ask our schools to take immediate action to support reproductive health and free gender expression on campus. This differs from school to school but includes: Plan B vending machines, mandatory abortion training for medical students, and material support for student parents.

  1. The right to not become a parent

    1. Provide funds to cover student travel out of state for abortion care (if legal).

      1. Alternative if the above is not legal: provide information about local abortion funds on the student health webpage; make donations to these funds in some sort of civil service project; allow representatives from abortion funds to distribute info on campus.

    2. Provide funds to pay for abortion services if health insurance doesn’t fully cover it (if legal).

    3. Put a Plan B vending machine on campus.

    4. Provide medication abortions in the student health center (if they are not available by mail in your area and if they are legal to provide on campus).

    5. Provide information on the student health webpage about:

      1. How to obtain an abortion, even if you have to travel out of state.

      2. How to practice safe sex and consent.

      3. An explanation of laws regulating abortion in your state.

      4. Advice on how to be safe online and prevent getting in legal trouble if you do need an abortion.

    6. Provide free at-home pregnancy tests (12 per student per year) for regular testing to catch pregnancies early (if the federal government refuses to provide this).

    7. Provide free contraception of all varieties (if your health insurance doesn’t already cover this).

      1. Hire health practitioners who are able to provide outpatient procedures such as inserting and removing IUDs and nexplanon implants (both with anesthetic).

    8. Provide legal support for students prosecuted for obtaining abortions.

    9. Provide paid time off for abortion procedures in addition to standard sick leave allotment (“medically necessary absence”).

  2. The right to become a parent

    1. Make affordable health insurance available through the university.

      1. Ensure that international student healthcare fees are not excessive; that students working for the university have access to university staff insurance subsidies; and that insurance available to faculty, staff, and students actually covers gender-affirming care and reproductive healthcare.

      2. Note that students receiving health insurance through the VA, IHS, or other federal program do not have access to abortion services, and strive to fill this gap.

    2. Provide (better) childcare subsidies.

    3. Create designated lactation rooms on campus.

    4. Provide guaranteed paid parental leave for student parents of all genders, even the non-birthing parent.

    5. Provide funds to cover egg/sperm banking (this is a really big ask…).

    6. Provide health insurance that covers IVF in cases of infertility.

    7. Provide fertility testing at the student health center or make sure it’s covered through off-campus providers (AMH blood test, etc.).

  3. Transgender rights

    1. Provide funds to pay for hormone therapy if insurance doesn’t fully cover it.

    2. Hire practitioners who are able to prescribe hormones, or write referral notes for hormones and surgeries, at the student health center.

    3. Implement preferred name change policies that do not require a legal name change, including the ability to change university email addresses.

    4. Provide specific training to Title IX coordinators around trans issues.

    5. End gendered categories/gender balance requirements in intramural sports.

    6. Require all-gender restrooms in ALL campus buildings, particularly gyms, classroom buildings, and healthcare facilities.

    7. Include needle disposal boxes in ALL restrooms, particularly in dorms.

    8. Ensure that "career closets" and other clothing exchange places have inclusive sizing labels.

    9. Remove gendered language from the code of conduct and other university policies.

    10. Include information about trans issues in Safe Space and similar trainings.

  4. Medical student training

    1. Make abortion training mandatory for medical students.

      1. Include sufficient family planning and abortion curriculum material in the preclinical years to prepare all students for rotations and clinical practice, as outlined in Medical Students for Choice’s Basic Curriculum for Reproductive Health.

      2. Expand clinical year opportunities for abortion and family planning focused sub-internships and electives to include all interested medical students.

    2. Support abortion training for out-of-state providers.

  5. Politics

    1. Issue a public statement condemning the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs vs. Jackson and affirming abortion as a fundamental human right.

    2. Stop supporting anti-choice political candidates (if applicable).

    3. Use the university’s leverage to pressure legislators to protect and expand abortion rights.

  6. Misc. bodily autonomy / medical privacy

    1. Eliminate policies requiring a doctor's note, funeral notice, or other proof of justification in order for an absence to be excused.
