Restore the Source: A Community Call to Preserve Tom Miller’s Murals

Baltimore

However Far the Stream Flows, It Never Forgets Its Source (1991) is the first public mural created in Baltimore by artist Tom Miller. More than a work of art, it is a cornerstone of Baltimore’s cultural landscape and a foundational piece of Miller’s public legacy. Today, this mural is at risk of permanent loss.

After more than 30 years of exposure to weather, pollution, and structural stress, the three-story mural at North Avenue and Harford Road is now in critical condition. Paint loss, exposed brick, cracking, and ongoing moisture damage threaten the remaining original imagery. Without immediate intervention, continued deterioration is inevitable.

Friends of Tom Miller is launching a phased restoration effort, beginning with Phase One, which focuses on stabilizing the wall, addressing moisture intrusion, conserving what remains of the original artwork, and restoring what has been lost. This work requires professional conservation, artistic restoration, and cannot move forward without public support.

By signing this petition and donating, you are:

- Affirming the cultural and historical significance of Tom Miller’s first Baltimore mural
- Supporting a responsible, phased restoration led by Friends of Tom Miller
- Helping ensure this mural remains visible, accessible, and rooted in the community for future generations
- Every contribution and every signature matters. Once the source is lost, it cannot be restored.

Stand with the community. Restore the source.

Sincerely,

Friends of Tom Miller
