Risk of forced displacement in Miranda and Corinto, Cauca Department, Colombia

Colombian Human Rights Attache

On June 16, clashes occurred between presumed members of the ELN and one of the FARC dissident groups Dagoberto Ramos Front in the rural vicinity of the municipalities of Miranda and Corinto in the department of Cauca. The clashes occurred despite an agreement having been made a week earlier about a ceasefire with the National Liberation Army (ELN), which will take effect on August 3, and a ceasefire with the Central General Staff (EMC) of FARC being in effect in Cauca.

Local campesinx and indigenous communities are worried about being caught in the crossfire and forced into displacement. Moreover, in recent days, pamphlets threatening social leaders of Cauca have been circulated by the armed groups in the region.

Witness for Peace - Solidarity Collective (WFPSC) calls on the Government of the United States to take action in the role of an international ally supporting the implementation of the 2016 Peace Accords by urging the Colombian Government to make its implementation effective so that the parties involved in the confrontations in Cauca, both illegal armed groups and the Colombian military, respect international humanitarian law and protect the civilian population.
