Save Deal Household Waste Recycling Centre from closure
Councillor Sean Holden, Chair of The Environment & Transport Cabinet Committee, Kent County Council.

Please sign this petition to demand that Kent County Council withdraw their proposal to close Deal Household Waste & Recycling Centre.
We are opposed to the closure or a reduction in services at any of the recycling centres administered by KCC and we stand shoulder to shoulder with those opposing the closure of nearby Richborough.
A report submitted to the KCC Environment and Transport Cabinet Committee on 23rd May 2023 identified ways in which the council could achieve revenue savings of £2.2m at the county’s Household Waste Recycling Centres over the next two years.
Initially Richborough Household Waste Recycling Centre was identified as at risk of closure by Kent County Council, along with sites in Maidstone, Faversham and Dartford. A revised set of options was then presented to the same committee on 5th July 2023, highlighting the closure of Deal and Swanley HWRC's as an option.
It is clear that KCC are determined to make the savings they’ve earmarked from the Household Waste Recycle Centres network and our local Deal and Richborough HWRC's both remain in their sights as candidates for closure.
The environmental impacts of increased fly-tipping and extended travel to alternative sites that closure of existing sites will cause has not been considered. This will push costs onto residents who are already hard-pressed by the rising cost of living. Likewise the costs of cleaning up fly-tipping will be borne by District Councils. The need for HRWCs is greater than ever, with large scale housing developments under construction all across the county.
This proposed closure is a short sighted decision solely based on financial savings to KCC. It is not in the best interests of Deal residents nor does it recognise the impact on the environment.
We understand that a consultation needs to be undertaken by KCC. When this is launched, we will link to it on this page and encourage everyone to make their views known.

Dear Councillor Holden,
We are opposed to the closure or a reduction in services at Deal HWRC or any of the recycling centres administered by KCC. We stand shoulder to shoulder with those opposing the closure of nearby Richborough HWRC.
It is not in the best interests of Deal residents nor does it recognise the impact on the environment, particularly increased CO2e emissions from travelling to sites that are further away from residents homes.
We understand that a consultation needs to be undertaken by KCC and will be responding to that once it is launched.
We urge you and KCC to abandon these shortsighted and deeply unpopular proposals.
Yours sincerely,
Concerned residents of Deal and surrounding areas
