We, the undersigned, are Minnesota residents, health care patients, health care workers, caregivers, and concerned neighbors. We are aware of the impending closure of Hennepin Healthcare (HCMC) due to federal cuts to health care funding and rising costs. And we are calling on you, as legislative leaders, to act now to stabilize HCMC’s finances by securing a dedicated revenue source for health care to repurpose and expand the Hennepin County ballpark sales tax.
*** Help us Save HCMC, Together! ***
Hennepin Healthcare is the premier Level One trauma center in Minnesota, serving the Twin Cities metro area, Greater Minnesota, and beyond. HCMC serves underinsured people, immigrants, and people on the margins. HCMC serves people with complex chronic health conditions, people with acute traumatic injuries, and people who need specialty services and treatment. HCMC serves roughly 115,000 unique patients each year, including almost 95,000 in the emergency department.
*** HCMC is for ALL OF US! ***
HCMC is an essential teaching hospital, contributing to the training of a majority of physicians practicing in Minnesota, including doctors across Greater Minnesota.
*** HCMC doesn’t turn anyone away! ***
In 2023, 48% of their patients were on Medicaid, which reimburses well below the cost of care. HCMC now provides more than $100 million per year in uncompensated care to patients who are unable to pay their bills; an amount that has more than doubled since 2020.
*** HCMC provides 20% of all uncompensated care in Minnesota! ***
Federal cuts to Medicaid and other health care funding changes have had a devastating effect on HCMC's financial picture. The hospital cannot remain open without a substantial new dedicated revenue source to make up for revenues lost from the federal government.
*** Without legislative action, HCMC WILL CLOSE! ***
We are calling on you to pass legislation creating a dedicated revenue source to stabilize HCMC’s financial situation. Specifically, we call on you to support the proposal to repurpose and expand the Hennepin County ballpark sales tax, from 0.15% to 1%, to stabilize HCMC’s financial situation and make an enduring investment in health care for our communities.
*** Save HCMC! Commit to supporting the sales tax proposal today! ***
