SAVE LAKE KIVU: NO TO DESTRUCTIVE GAS EXPLOITATION!

The Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly the Ministry of Hydrocarbons, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, and the provincial authorities of North and South Kivu.

Lake Kivu, a natural jewel of Central Africa, is today threatened by the imminent exploitation of gas blocks. This industrial operation, carried out without transparency or consultation with local communities, risks severely disrupting the lake’s ecosystem, depleting its biodiversity, and contaminating its waters. Yet these waters nourish and supply thousands of citizens living along its shores every day

We, citizens and advocates for peace and climate justice, take the following actions.
1. We demand the immediate suspension of all gas operations on Lake Kivu
2. We demand this continue until a serious, independent, and participatory environmental assessment is conducted. Development cannot come at the expense of life, health, and the future of local populations. The gas of the lake must not become a curse for those who depend on it.
3. We demand in this assessment that solutions be spelled out to protect the Lake.

By signing this petition, you stand with the lakeside communities to protect Lake Kivu from the brutal exploitation of its resources. Join us in demanding a just energy transition based on the preservation of common goods and environmental justice.
