On July 5, 2018, families of current students and alumnae received an email stating that the Maine Girls' Academy, formerly Catherine McAuley High School, would cease to operate as of July 15, 2018. We were told that the closure of the school was the result of financial difficulties. MGA is the ONLY all girls' school in Maine.

It is "home" to a remarkable group of girls as well as faculty and staff. The school community encourages girls to be who they are without hesitation or apology, to own their strengths as well as their weaknesses and to go into the world prepared to change it for the better. It's a place where girls run every club, every team, and every meeting. In an all girls' environment, girls learn to trust one another. They learn to value each other's words and opinions, at the same time organically developing confidence in the value of their own words and opinions.

The world needs more schools like this and we can't afford to lose the only one in Maine. For those unfamiliar with the school, MGA is known for academic rigor combined with an open and welcoming community experience. Girls who graduate from MGA enter STEM fields at higher rates than those who attend coed high schools. The school also boasts a 100% college acceptance rate.

This petition is a request to the Maine Girls' Academy Board of Trustees and Head of School to provide MGA supporters with MORE TIME to develop a a financial campaign and other solutions to save this special school. If you are a current student, parent or guardian of a current student, alumna, parent or guardian or an alumna, a member of the faculty or staff, or another supporter of quality, all girls education, we hope that you'll join us by signing this petition to let these girls know how much they matter - to you, to the community and to the world.
