I respectfully ask that you vote no in the Senate on November 13, 2017 regarding the bill which will allow trials of cashless welfare to go ahead in certain locations across Australia. Cashless welfare has many problems, with 80% of Newstart benefit being quarantined for chosen large corporations. It is a breach of human rights to disallow those on welfare to spend their meager benefit on what they choose. It will most probably lead to an increase in crime with restrictions on cash spending. It will lead to apartheid in society, humiliating those on the card which will most likely precipitate an increase in mental health crises. Small businesses will predictably suffer from less cash being available in the community which will, in turn, lead to further job losses. This is not the Fair Go Society, Australia is known to be by others around the world, but a divided one where people through no fault of their own are marginalized and punished. This same scheme has been tried in remote Aboriginal areas and has failed miserably. I ask that you consider the ethics of large profits being gained by corporations while those using the service would continue to exist under the poverty line. I request that you consider all of these aspects when you are asked to vote in the senate on November 13 to pass the cashless welfare bill.
