Say No to Corporate Giveaways and Yes to Affordable Housing in the Railyards
Sacramento City Council
Sacramento is proposing a $222 million taxpayer subsidy for wealthy developers in the Railyards, a plan that only has 6% affordable housing. 6% affordable housing is shamelessly inadequate. Sacramento deserves better!
Last year, a clear majority of Railyards residents protested the $92 million EIFD (Enhanced Infrastructure Financing District) subsidy, which forced the termination of the subsidy proposal under California law. Now, a year later, Sacramento is bringing the same bad deal, but with all residents drawn out of the plan boundaries to try to take away ability to reject the proposal. Instead of improving the plan, Sacramento is trying to undemocratically silence residents.
Sacramento must stop putting wealthy developers before everyday residents struggling with housing affordability. The City is facing an affordable housing crisis. The Railyards redevelopment will double the size of downtown Sacramento. If our city leaders really take housing affordability and homelessness seriously, this is their biggest opportunity to set us on a new path.

We oppose Sacramento’s plans to give wealthy developers an estimated $222 million in taxpayer money for their Railyards development. The Railyards deal is a ripoff for the people of Sacramento, giving huge subsidies to developers with very little in return for the community. While Sacramentans face homelessness, displacement, and food insecurity, this project only includes 6% affordable housing. If city leaders really take Sacramento’s affordability crisis seriously, they should amend the Railyards project to include 25% affordable housing, a rent stabilization fund, and a grocery store.
Last year, Sacramento residents used their voice in a democratic process to reject the Railyards EIFD (Enhanced Infrastructure Financing District) and demand a better plan. This year, the City changed the district boundaries to cut all residents out to try to stop them from formally protesting. Instead of listening to residents and making the project better, Sacramento is trying to undemocratically silence them.
A city with an affordability crisis and a major deficit should not be giving away taxpayer money to wealthy developers who plan to build just 6% affordable housing. By ignoring its constituents in favor of developers, the City is revealing who it prioritizes.
Don’t approve the EIFD or any other subsidy for the Railyards without improving the project! Don’t silence residents! Negotiate a better Railyards deal for Railyards neighbors and for all of Sacramento, with 25% affordable housing at the Railyards, a rent stabilization fund, and a grocery store!
