SIGN OUR PETITION. Children should love learning English. Scrap the SPAG exam now!

Rt. Hon. Bridget Phillipson MP, Secretary of State for Education

Heads, teachers, writers, poets, celebrities and academic experts are all against the SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) SATs exam taken by year 6 pupils aged 10 and 11.

The test reduces our living English language to a series of yes/no/fronted adverbial/subordinate clause/passive progressive tense-style questions and answers.

It kills love of learning - love of reading, writing stories, all the things children are eager to practise and enjoy. And leaves too many pupils with a sense of failure.

Everyone agrees: it’s time to scrap the SPAG exam.

It kills love of learning– love of reading, writing stories, all the things children are eager to practise and enjoy – and leaves too many pupils with a sense of failure.

Everyone – heads, teachers, parents and children – agrees: it’s time to remove the SPAG exam.

Please include this measure in any reforms to primary assessment coming out of the Curriculum and Assessment Review.
