Justice Delayed is Justice Denied

In August 2021, the Boston Public School District launched an investigation of Mission Hill School.

Eight months later the District, despite repeated promises, has not released a single finding from this investigation nor from the follow-up Emergency School Review initiated in the fall of 2021.

BPS’s failure to release any findings is crushing Mission Hill School’s future:

• Current teachers are making plans to leave
• The governing board has been forbidden to begin the hiring of new classroom teachers
• Parents are being forced to look elsewhere for their children’s schooling
• Mission Hill School is being prosecuted in the press with little ability to respond or make necessary changes

Superintendent Casselius has highlighted the importance of retaining teachers, but BPS leadership has instructed our school’s personnel committee to not interview candidates for vacant classroom teaching positions until the investigations are concluded and shared. This uncertainty makes hiring and retaining skilled and experienced staff very difficult.  

It also undermines our current staff - teaching is hard enough without worrying whether your school will even exist next year or if it will be changed in ways that make it unrecognizable.

The District can and must share the results of these investigations IMMEDIATELY, for the good of the school community and to avoid Mission Hill School being fatally undermined by bureaucracy and neglect.

With the District sitting on its findings, the School Governing Board is unable to make any changes, address community concerns, or answer the most basic questions posed by candidates for our school leadership or MHS families.

• If these investigations yielded serious concerns, the District would be undermining student safety by failing to share them.
• If the investigation yielded only the usual struggles of a public school serving a high proportion of high needs children during a pandemic, then withholding the results of the investigations amounts to a deliberate undermining of the school and our community.

Justice delayed is Justice denied.

The District must commit publicly to Mission Hill School’s future and to supporting the School in making all necessary changes to succeed for years to come.

Justicia retrasada es justicia negada

El Distrito Escolar Público de Boston lanzó una investigación de la Escuela Mission Hil en agosto de 2021.

Ocho meses después, el Distrito, a pesar de las promesas repetidas, no ha publicado un solo hallazgo de esta investigación ni de la Revisión de Emergencia Escolar iniciada en el otoño de 2021.

El fracaso de BPS en la publicación de cualquier hallazgo está aplastando el futuro de Mission Hill School:

• Los maestros actuales están haciendo planes para abandonar
• Se ha prohibido a la junta directiva comenzar a contratar nuevos maestros de aula
• Los padres se ven obligados a buscar otras escuelas para sus hijos
• La Escuela Mission Hill está siendo enjuiciada en la prensa con poca capacidad para que las personas encargadas de dirigir la escuela respondan o realicen los cambios necesarios

El Superintendente Casselius ha destacado la importancia de retener a los maestros, pero el liderazgo de BPS ha instruido al comité de personal de nuestra escuela a no entrevistar a los candidatos para puestos vacantes de enseñanza en el salón de clases hasta que las investigaciones concluyan y se compartan. Esta incertidumbre hace muy difícil contratar y retener personal calificado y experimentado.  

También sofoca a nuestro personal actual: la enseñanza es suficientemente difícil sin preocuparse de si la escuela existirá el próximo año o si se cambiará de manera que sea irreconocible.

El Distrito puede y debe compartir los resultados de estas investigaciones para INMEDIATAMENTE, por el bien de la comunidad escolar y para evitar que la Escuela Mission Hill sea fatalmente sofocada por la burocracia y el descuido.

Con el distrito manteniendo silencio sobre sus hallazgos, la Junta Directiva Escolar no puede hacer ningún cambio, tratar de las preocupaciones de la comunidad, o contestar las preguntas más básicas planteadas por los candidatos para nuestro liderazgo escolar o por las familias de MHS.

• Si estas investigaciones hubieran dado lugar a serias preocupaciones, el Distrito estaría ocultando información necesaria para la seguridad de los estudiantes.
• Si la investigación sólo produjo las luchas habituales de una escuela pública al servicio de una alta proporción de niños con necesidades especiales durante una pandemia, retener los resultados de las investigaciones equivale a un deliberado debilitamiento de la escuela y nuestra comunidad.

Justicia demorada es Justicia negada.

El Distrito debe comprometerse públicamente con el futuro de Mission Hill School y a la Escuela en la realización de todos los cambios necesarios para tener éxito en los años venideros.
