Please mail a letter to the warden to release an Indigenous land defender NOW
Richard Lacroix, Warden
(28/2/2025) Today is the day Stacy should have been released if remission were granted (since he has served two thirds of his sentence, the point at which others incarcerated for opposing TMX pipeline expansion were released). However, he remains in Fraser Regional Correctional Centre (FRCC).
We wanted to have this practice of denying remission judicially reviewed, but that did not work out. We are looking into other ways to challenge this unjust practice that will negatively impact not just Stacy but all land defenders who get incarcerated after him. This, however, will take time to work its way through the courts.
For now, if you can, please take a few minutes to mail a letter to the warden of FRCC.
Below is a sample of what to say (in the spirit of diplomacy).
*This is not a petition to be submit via email, but it is a letter to be mailed to the FRCC. Please ignore "From: Rita Protectors" below as the text is generated automatically.

Dear Mr. Lacroix,
I am writing to request that you grant Stacy Gallagher remission. Stacy is currently being held in November House at FRCC. He was sentenced to a 90-day sentence for his peaceful, ceremonial work trying to protect Coast Salish lands and waters from being harmed by the expansion of the TransMountain pipeline. The sentence was imposed to deter people from acting on their valid concerns about how the pipeline worsens the climate crisis that we are in. The pipeline was completed last year despite Stacy’s principled efforts, yet he remains incarcerated today.
He has been told that his release date, without remission, is March 28. If remission were applied, he should have been released on Feb 28. This would be consistent with the fact that dozens of people who were incarcerated for their land and water protection efforts received remission. In closing, I am writing to ask that you release Stacy Gallagher immediately.
Thank you for your consideration,
