SHAVONDA SUMTER FOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR
GOVERNOR MIKIE SHERRILL
The departure of Lieutenant Governor Dr. Dale Caldwell creates more than a vacancy; it creates a defining moment for Black representation in New Jersey. Caldwell made history as New Jersey’s first Black male Lieutenant Governor. His departure should not mean the disappearance of Black leadership from one of the highest offices in our state.
National Action Network Monmouth/Ocean County and the undersigned call upon Governor Mikie Sherrill to respect the Black voters who were instrumental to Governor Sherrill’s election.
94% of Black New Jersey voters supported Sherrill in 2025.
Approximately 857,600 Black citizens make up New Jersey's voting-eligible population, representing about 13.9% of the state's total eligible electorate
We refuse to be indispensable on Election Day and disposable when it is time to govern.
Shavonda Sumter, a former state Assemblywoman and leader of the Legislative Black Caucus, brings substantial experience in public service and state government. She is our choice, but we earned a seat at the table. Black representation cannot be celebrated during campaign season and treated as negotiable afterward.
Appoint Shavonda Sumter Lieutenant Governor.
