Sheffield Hallam Students Support the Strike

Sheffield Hallam University

Sheffield Hallam students stand in solidarity with striking staff!

UCU members at Sheffield Hallam are striking over the 'Four Fights' national dispute (pay, equality, casualisation, workloads) and a local dispute over academic work planning.

Further details at: https://ucuhallam.org/dispute/studentfaq/

What are we asking for?

✔️ The university to meet UCU's demands to prevent further strikes
✔️ Commit to adding unpaid wages to the Student Hardship Fund
✔️ Student non-attendance to be unrecorded
✔️ Protections for Tier 4 international students
✔️ 'Record of teaching activities not taking place' form to be removed

Why should I support the strike?

❌ Most lecturers working 50+ hours a week
❌ Pay value down 20% in 10 years
❌ Significant pay gap for women and BAME staff
❌ 500+ staff on precarious zero-hour contracts
❌ 56% increase in referrals to counselling

Why is this important for students?

❌ Lecturers currently have only 20 minutes to mark a 2000 word essay
❌ SHU has prevented staff from giving students their side of the story
❌ Students are being asked to report striking staff - we are not surveillance tools!
❌ Staff overwork impacts our learning conditions
❌ We are the workers of tomorrow - engaging with trade unions is an important learning experience
