[SIGN] NO mining road through Gates of the Arctic

Biden Administration

Right now, the Biden administration is weighing whether to go ahead with a mining road that would slice through the Brooks Range in Alaska, including part of Gates of the Arctic National Park.

The proposed Ambler road would cut through 211 miles of northwestern Alaska, threatening fisheries and Western Arctic caribou that are important to Alaska Native communities. Key bird habitat would be in the line of fire, too. And the road would enable the development of hard-rock mines that history suggests are likely to spill hazardous waste materials into the surrounding environment.

Between now and Nov. 4, please take a moment to add your name to The Wilderness Society’s petition to the Biden administration: The Ambler mining road is a threat to communities and wildlife!

I support The Wilderness Society’s petition to the Biden administration, asking them to thoroughly weigh the environmental impacts of the proposed Ambler Mining District Industrial Access Road through the southern Brooks Range foothills, especially the threats of development on fisheries and caribou on which Alaska Native communities rely.

The Ambler mining road is set to cut through part of Gates of the Arctic National Park, cross thousands of waterways and disrupt the migration path of the Western Arctic caribou herd. Building it would cause thousands of acres of wildlands to be bulldozed and could disturb traditional hunting grounds and other important cultural areas. Further, the road would enable destructive copper mining that would be highly likely to pollute drinking water and habitat.

Groups representing dozens of tribes in the Alaska Interior have previously sued to stop the project, contending that previous federal review of the project was rushed. We cannot make the same mistake again. I support The Wilderness Society’s efforts to press the Biden administration to undertake a complete review of the potential impacts of the Ambler mining road, including full consultation with Alaska Native communities in the area.
