President Donald Trump and his Departments of Energy and Interior

A few weeks ago we got wind that Trump’s Department of the Interior was considering a new plan to lease waters off Alaska, the Gulf, California, and more. Their goal, as ever, is to reward their fossil fuel paymasters with maximum profits, while the rest of America suffers with higher prices, pollution, and climate chaos.

Over the last month, we’ve told you about how, after California gave Trump the electoral drubbing he so sorely deserves, he appeared to single out the Golden state for offshore drilling. Then came Trump’s plan to allow destructive oil drilling in millions of acres off the coast of Alaska.

But almost all offshore drilling in the U.S. — 99 percent of it — already takes place in the Gulf. And Trump’s official plan would dramatically expand where offshore drilling can happen, including places where it has never happened, or where lease sales have not been held for decades.

This poses significant threats: To communities across the entire Gulf region living on the frontlines of pollution and extraction; To countless marine plants and animals including threatened and endangered whales; And to all of us as it will lock us into decades of fossil fuel addiction, which drives climate change, which drives extreme weather including more and more-devastating hurricanes.

And Trump’s drilling plan for the Gulf is especially reckless: After the BP horizon disaster in 2010, Scientists found that several species of whales and dolphins in the Gulf died off dramatically. Trump’s drilling plan will push the industry to drill in more and riskier deepwater areas of the Gulf, increasing the likelihood of another major oil spill.

The good news is that Trump’s offshore drilling plan just opened for public comment - we’re months away from any actual leases. And just because he offers an area for lease, doesn’t mean that Big Oil will want to actually drill. But the bad news is that if Trump succeeds, this plan would remain in place at least 2030 - well after Trump is supposed to leave office.

We’re going to fight back talon and claw to stop Trump’s offshore drilling plans nationwide. But the Gulf South needs your help NOW. Sign on now to say you’re opposed to offshore drilling in the Gulf, and we’ll keep you up to date as new details become available, and more states fight back against Trump and his fossil fueled plans.

The draft plans reported by the Washington Post and other sources to auction offshore oil leases along U.S. coastlines — even in areas that have been off-limits for decades — are egregious and wrong. We, the undersigned, call on this Administration to drop all new plans for offshore fossil fuel drilling, and put this reckless administration on notice that we will fight you on every coast to protect our climate and communities.
