Despite public opposition, USDA approved Intrexon’s genetically engineered, non-browning “Arctic” apple. The apple is being sold on Amazon as “Arctic ApBitz Dried Apple Snacks.” Nowhere on the package does it state that the apples in this product are genetically engineered.

We are demanding that Amazon reject genetically engineered Arctic apples.

Amazon may sell only this one GMO apple product now, but the online retailer could also add other GMO apple products. Either way, Amazon is supporting Intrexon and the mass production of GMO apples.

Eventually, unlabeled genetically engineered apples could find their way into fruit snacks, juice, baby foods, or apple sauce. We need to stop this in its tracks.

Pre-sliced apples are already a frequently recalled food product. Once the whole fruit is sliced, it has an increased risk of exposure to pathogens. Since browning is a sign that apples are no longer fresh, “masking” this natural sign could lead people to consume contaminated apples.

Whether dried or fresh, selling unlabeled genetically engineered apples is irresponsible given they have not be adequately assessed for health or environmental risks.

This completely unnecessary product poses several risks to apple growers, the food industry, and consumers. There are naturally non-browning apples that are non-GMO and organic on the market.

Sign now to demand that Amazon listen to its customers’ concerns and reject genetically engineered apples.
