Beyond Extreme Energy is about replacing the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission with our Federal Renewable Energy Commission. We want to turn FERC into FREC. We need a federal energy agency that gets it on the urgent need to transition away from fossil fuels to clean, jobs-creating, renewable energy and energy efficiency.
A new FREC would also respect Indigenous sovereignty and consciously prioritize local involvement and power as far as decision-making about proposed, new energy projects.
If we had such an agency, the Navajo Nation, the Hopi and other Native peoples in the Southwest would not be faced, as they now are, with a fight against plans to build three dams in the Grand Canyon region they call home. These dams would drastically impact an area which has deep spiritual and cultural importance. They would affect water supply in a part of the country already in serious drought conditions. They would destroy the natural beauty and ecological integrity of a remote and pristine canyon.
Sign here to tell FERC to reject a preliminary permit to dam Big Canyon, a tributary canyon to the Little Colorado River Gorge near Grand Canyon National Park.
This "Big Canyon Pumped Storage Project" would pump billions of gallons of ancient groundwater to feed a massive hydroelectric power plant. This is NOT the kind of renewable energy BXE supports!
The confluence of the Colorado and Little Colorado rivers holds deep meaning for Native peoples of the Grand Canyon region. The Hopi people believe they emerged into the world from this place. For the Navajo people, the Little Colorado River drainage is their current home, and the confluence is a sacred place to share their prayers. At least 10 tribes have ancestral and current connections to the Little Colorado River.
On June 2, 2020 the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission opened a 60-day comment period on the permit application. Comments are due by August 3, 2020.
Sign here to tell FERC to reject this permit! Please take a minute to personalize your comment, why this issue is important to you. We will get all of the signatures and all of your comments in to FERC by August 3, but to do so you need to sign now.

I oppose the proposal to build new dams that would threaten the Grand Canyon. Please deny Pumped Hydro Storage LLC's application for a preliminary permit to dam Big Canyon.
