Sign on: Tell the FDA that heavy metals have no place in baby food

FDA

This news is stunning and outrageous, but it’s true: A recent congressional report found significant levels of toxic heavy metals in baby food—both conventional and organic. Lead. Arsenic. Cadmium. Mercury. These are poisonous to a baby’s developing brain and nervous system. No mother should have to worry about what she is spooning into her babies’ mouths, day after day.

Why on earth are heavy metals in baby food? Heavy metals are found in the soil and water used to grow food. They can also be introduced during manufacturing—during the process of making the food. And they can be introduced during the packaging processes. Whatever routes heavy metals take into food must be closed. Baby food manufacturers are currently not required to test their products at every stage of manufacturing. This is unacceptable.

What can we do? Our government can do a lot to make our babies safer. The Food and Drug Administration has control over food products and can stop this contamination. They should have done it decades ago, but they can act now.

A recent congressional report, titled “Baby Foods Are Tainted with Dangerous Levels of Arsenic, Lead, Cadmium, and Mercury,” found “significant levels” of heavy metals, including lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury, in baby food. Heavy metals harm our children’s health. They have been linked to cancer and disease, and their presence in baby food is horrifying because of the potential impact of heavy metals on the brain development and nervous system of babies and young children. The science is clear on this. No mother should have to worry about what she is spooning into her babies’ mouths, day after day.

It is time for the FDA to take long overdue action to ensure baby food contamination is stopped at every step of manufacture, from food source to production to packaging. Baby food manufacturers are currently not required to test their products at every stage of manufacturing. This is hard to believe—and it is unacceptable.

We are counting on you to develop and enforce standards to keep our baby food free of toxic heavy metals.
