SIGN: Stop the Extreme Confinement of Farmed Animals
United States Congress
Every year, millions of farmed animals are locked in cages and crates so small they can barely move for their entire lives.
- Gestation crates confine mother pigs in spaces barely larger than their own bodies, unable to turn around, for months at a time during pregnancy.
- Veal crates confine baby calves taken from their mothers, restricting nearly all movement until slaughter.
- Battery cages pack egg-laying hens into wire enclosures so cramped they cannot spread their wings.
This level of confinement causes immense physical and psychological suffering. It is out of step with public values, and it has already been banned or phased out in a growing number of states and countries.
We call on lawmakers to end the extreme confinement of farmed animals by:
- Banning gestation crates, veal crates, and battery cages.
- Requiring that farmed animals be able to stand up, lie down, turn around, and extend their limbs without touching the sides of their enclosure.
- Enforcing existing confinement laws and closing loopholes that allow continued use of these systems.
Animals raised for food deserve protection from cruelty, just as we extend that protection to animals in every other part of our lives. We urge you to act now.
