Sign the petition: All incarcerated people deserve the possibility of parole. Rescind the Truth in Sentencing Act

Congress

Earlier this fall, imprisoned people in over 17 states held a major prison strike to protest human rights abuses and poor conditions. Though the strike is officially over, imprisoned people are still physically, mentally, and emotionally abused, while their civil rights are grossly violated. On top of this many are also denied parole and rehabilitation because of cruel legislation.

A decade ago, imprisoned people released served on average 30 months in prison or 44% of their sentence. That’s because many were granted parole due to good behavior. Those with parole would be allowed to serve the remaining portion of their sentence in the community, under supervision, and transition back into society after encagement.

However, because of the Truth in Sentencing Act (TIS), people today serve about 85 percent of their sentences in over 30 states. This law requires incarcerated people serve the majority of their sentence without the possibility of parole even if they have proven exemplary behavior and low chances of re-offending.

Sign the petition to Congress: All incarcerated people deserve the chance of parole and rehabilitation. Rescind the Truth in Sentencing laws today.

TIS keeps incarcerated people separated from their loved ones and unable to truly build back their lives in the free world. Incarceration is punishment enough and everyone deserves a second chance to at least have parole and rehabilitation when they clearly pose no threat.

Sign the petition if you agree: All incarcerated people deserve the chance to transition back into society after encagement.
