Sign the petition: Demand special prosecutors for police brutality
governors and attorneys general
Prosecutors are the most powerful law officials in the criminal justice system.
Prosecutors decide whether to dismiss a case or proceed with prosecuting police officers. Prosecutors decide how to try the case, what evidence to present and what charges to bring. Often, the evidence they use comes directly from the police department of the officer involved in the incident. This leaves little room for impartiality.
In this system, justice has little chance of being served through local prosecutors and local investigations of excessive force by police. The police officers involved are likely to know and work closely with the local prosecutor.
Sign the petition demanding governors and attorney generals assign an independent investigator and special prosecutor to cases involving police officers and excessive force.

We urge you to appoint independent investigators and special prosecutors to all cases involving police and excessive force.
Police need to be held accountable for harming citizens. The close relationship between local prosecutors and local police departments is of great concern--independent, outside actors should be leading investigations and prosecutions of police officers.
