Five people are dead and others severely injured due to an ongoing humanitarian crisis affecting Mississippi prisons. Photos, videos, and messages from residents inside Mississippi correctional facilities depict chaos, inhumane living conditions, and outcries for relief.

Loved ones of those impacted are desperate for answers that Mississippi officials have yet to provide.

Unfortunately these recent events prove what many have demanded over the years -- Mississippi prisons need a complete overhaul and immediate corrective action.

Last year Mississippi elected officials ignored warnings from Mississippi Department of Corrections officials that horrific events like riots, escapes, and deaths that occurred over the past week were looming.

The Department of Justice must step in and investigate the deplorable conditions of Mississippi prisons. Mississippi elected officials have failed those they are tasked with serving.

Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) along with civic organizations like the Mississippi State Conference NAACP, ACLU of Mississippi, and SPLC have filed a joint complaint with the Department of Justice to investigate the horrendous state of Mississippi’s prison. We MUST join in solidarity.

How many more residents of correctional facilities must die? How many more sleepless nights for loved ones worrying about an incarcerated family member, friend, or partner must occur before the major issues plaguing Mississippi prisons are addressed?

Former governor Phil Bryant and Governor elect Tate Reeves both made statements blaming the past week’s events on “gang” violence. But “gangs” do not cause brown water to flow from faucets of the correctional facilities that people are made to drink. Gangs do not force people to live in dilapidated buildings with no A/C during scorching hot summers. And gangs do not provide inadequate meals that are unfit for zoo animals.

To be clear, the riots, deaths, and anxiety of concerned loved ones are largely the result of the failed and inadequate leadership of Mississippi officials. Please add your name today to demand the Department of Justice investigate the current state of Mississippi Prisons.

Five residents of Mississippi correctional facilities died this week because of major crises plaguing the Mississippi prison system. It is imperative you investigate current prison conditions and hold Mississippi elected officials accountable. Refusal to do so puts the health and safety of incarcerated persons, correctional staff and the broader community in jeopardy.
