Sign the petition: Senate must have all of Kavanaugh’s records before holding hearings

U.S. Senate

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wants to rush through Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation as soon as possible so he can be seated before the Court’s term begins in October.

But Mitch McConnell has a problem: there are over one million documents in Kavanaugh’s paper trail, most of them from his five-year tenure in George W. Bush’s White House. His work in the Bush administration could shed light on how he would rule as a Supreme Court justice on issues ranging from abortion to domestic spying.

It would be grossly irresponsible for the United States Senate to confirm someone to the United States Supreme Court without reviewing their entire record. As Senator Chuck Schumer wrote, Kavanaugh’s papers may help us understand the kind of jurist he would be on the Supreme Court—a necessary step toward determining how Kavanaugh would tip the balance of the Court for decades to come.

For Kavanaugh, that will take real time. A former director of the presidential libraries division at the National Archives said it would not be possible to review such a paper trail within a month, which throws a wrench into the GOP plan to fast-track Kavanaugh’s confirmation process.

Even Republican Senator Chuck Grassley, Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he was worried about the “massive” amount of material and admitted he didn’t see how it could be ready by Labor Day.

This is not an unreasonable request, and in fact mirrors bipartisan calls––including from Senator Grassley himself––for all of Elena Kagan’s White House records prior to her consideration for the Supreme Court.

We have to pile on constituent pressure to make sure that every member of the Senate—starting with the Senate Judiciary Committee—reviews all of Kavanaugh’s documents, emails, and paperwork before the confirmation process continues.

It is of the utmost importance that you review all documents, emails, and paperwork associated with Brett Kavanaugh before proceeding with the confirmation process. We deserve to know what kind of jurist he may be and how his personal views may interfere with Court rulings.
