Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis wants to be president in 2024, and is doing all he can to inherit, capitalize on, and politicize Donald Trump's hate—egged on by the GOP state legislature.

Unfortunately, the people of Florida are the victims of his White House ambitions. In the 2021 legislative session alone, Gov. DeSantis and the legislature have passed:

• An outrageous assault on voting rights (SB 90), which bans voter drop boxes and sets up new roadblocks to vote by mail. (Ironically, some Florida Republicans now worry it may unintentionally disenfranchise seniors who are a major part of their voter base.)

• An authoritarian crackdown on protests (SB 484), which severely infringes on First Amendment rights—and gives motorists legal protection if they mow down protesters.

• A bill that allows the government to dictate how private companies police their social media platforms, after Twitter and Facebook rightfully banned Donald Trump.

• A bill that bans transgender girls from participating in high school sports, which will lead to more teen suicides. This is a cultural wedge issue that Republicans have increasingly used to marginalize a group of children. It is shameful.

• After DeSantis spent much of 2020 minimizing the COVID pandemic and allowing infections to spread through Florida, he has now suspended all local protections to prematurely reopen the state despite millions of Floridians still not vaccinated.

These bills—and more—prompted the Orlando Sentinel to editorialize: "we cannot remember a year when so many bad laws have been proposed." All of this for Ron DeSantis to remain in the good graces of Donald Trump, so he can be the Republican heir apparent in 2024.

It's cruel, despicable, irrational and unbelievably stupid. And we are determined to build a national political movement to fight this hate and bigotry every step of the way.
