Sign the petition: Prevent a “New Prop 13” and save local housing!
Several jurisdictions in California have passed poorly-designed tax measures that are threatening to severely harm the state’s ability to fund vital services like housing, schools, homelessness services, public safety, and fire protection.
Over the past few years, several California cities have experimented with high real estate transfer taxes sold to voters as “mansion taxes,” such as Los Angeles’ Measure ULA and San Francisco’s Prop I.
But rather than achieve the stated goals of increasing revenues AND increasing the housing stock, these taxes were set too high – and have stalled urgently-needed new housing construction.
In addition to harming housing production, they have spurred a backlash from the same anti-tax organization that wrote Prop 13 in the first place: the Howard Jarvis Taxpayer’s Association has placed a measure on the November ballot that would devastate housing production and crush the ability of most California jurisdictions to raise revenue.
We can forestall that – but time is running short. That’s why we’re urging the California Legislature and Governor Gavin Newsom to take immediate action on statewide transfer tax reform. Will you help build momentum?
