The United States Supreme Court gets all the attention for their landmark decisions, but the United States Federal Courts of Appeals are just as important when it comes to interpreting our laws and legally defining our policies.

Trump's latest nominee to the federal appeals court is Steven Menashi -- a Nazi-sympathizer who has continually written a slew of articles and op-eds denouncing diversity, women, and LGBTQ+ rights.

Currently, Menashi works at the White House where he is part of the immigration working group tasked with advancing the Trump Administration’s racist and xenophobic immigration policies. Before that, Menashi was acting general counsel to Betsy DeVos's Department of Education, where he helped overturn policies that protect students’ civil rights, including the Title IX proposed rule that would allow schools to dismiss many complaints of sexual harassment, including sexual assault.

Menashi's policy ideas are frightening. While in college his writings denounced LGBTQ rights and mocked anti-rape activists. He pushed xenophobic conspiracy theories and attacked need-based financial assistance because it "punished families that had the foresight and prudence to save for their children's education.” Most frightening is his belief in ethnonationalism -- or that a democracy can't work unless the country is defined by one race or ethnicity.

Menashi has also spread dangerous lies about reproductive health, writing, without citing specific sources, that the procedure often involved infanticide.

During Menashi’s confirmation hearing, he was chided by Republicans and Democrats for avoiding questions and his past bigoted writings. It was a disastrous hearing that was rushed through simply because of his partisan nomination.

Trump is careless, unprepared, and does things on a whim. Oftentimes he will nominate people just because he knows them, or because he liked how they looked on television. Frequently, this results in deeply unqualified nominees who even some Senate Republicans can’t stomach voting for -- we MUST encourage them to join with Senate Democrats to defeat this nomination.
