Senators Joe Manchin & Kyrsten Sinema

In January, Democratic U.S. senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema blocked urgently needed legislation to protect our freedom to vote because they refused to support filibuster reform.

Additionally, they have consistently delayed Senate passage of the Build Back Better Act that would fight climate change, expand health care, cut child poverty and more.

As a result of their obstruction, longtime Republican and corporate donors have showered both senators with campaign funds, knowing how essential they are to blocking progress.

Sen. Manchin raised nearly $300,000 from corporate political action committees and executives in the days after he went on Fox News to announce his opposition to the Build Back Better Act. Many of these donors are very prolific fundraisers for Republicans and Donald Trump.

On the day before she blocked voting rights legislation in the Senate, Sen. Sinema attended a Houston fundraiser with fossil fuel executives. At the event, she told the mostly Republican crowd that they could be “rest assured” she would not back any changes to the filibuster.

Sens. Manchin and Sinema want us to believe that their opposition to progressive reform is based on principle. However, the stench of Republican and corporate money they are being rewarded with makes it appear that a nefarious agenda is at play.

Only by returning these donations can Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema prove to us that they are working with other Senate Democrats in good faith.
