The Trump Administration's zero-tolerance policy resulted in 3,000 families being separated at the border. More than a year after a federal judge ordered reunification, 30 children still remain in U.S. custody—and we don't know if they will ever see their parents again.

The administration has continued to rip apart families since the judge’s order, under outrageous circumstances, even as kids ordered to be reunited remain without their parents.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has called for a 9/11 style commission to probe these abuses by the Trump Administration. Just like the 9/11 commission investigated what went wrong that led to a terrorist attack, we need to expose what happened here as well.

“The 9/11 commission, was charged with ... making sure they dug out every nook and cranny of what happened and how it happened in our system,” said Ocasio-Cortez at a constituent town hall. “And I think that that kind of study is what’s going to be required in order to reunite as many children with their parents as possible. That’s the work that we have to do.”

We agree. Trump's child separation policy is one of the most catastrophic human rights abuses in recent memory, and perpetrators must be held accountable.

Trump's child separation policy will go down as one of the most shameful chapters in U.S. history. We need a 9/11-style commission to investigate and expose its abuses, so that we can assess what went wrong and who is to be held accountable.
