The undersigned stand as Smith students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community members in support of the protestors occupying College Hall. This petition demands that Smith College divest from weapons manufacturers and war profiteers.
The signers of this petition support the demands of the students occupying College Hall, which follow:
Immediate scheduling of a Board of Trustees meeting and an emergency meeting of the ACIR, leading to:
Complete divestment from aerospace and defense companies, including Lockheed Martin, Boeing, L3Harris, Raytheon, General Dynamics, Hexcel, and Northrop Grumman.
Full immunity from investigation or punishment by the Conduct Board for all occupants of College Hall.
Public acknowledgement of the March 27th assault of a student by Jim Gray and the opening of an investigation into the incident with severe consequences for Jim Gray, as well as present administrators and campus safety Officer Zachary (unit no. 512), who were passive bystanders to the assault.
In the meeting on 3/30 between Smith students occupying College Hall, President Sarah Willie-LeBreton, and Dean Alex Keller, the President implied that these demands and the protestors do not have broad support and that they should think of the entire Smith community. She stated that by occupying College Hall, protestors are only inconveniencing the rest of the student body by shutting down student services inside of College Hall. The protestors, as students who utilize these services as well, are acutely aware of the importance of these services, but believe that disruption is necessary when injustice is occurring. There can be no status quo during genocide, at Smith College or anywhere. There is no disability justice, no equity and inclusion, no protection from legal discrimination, no class justice that can exist without a free Palestine.
This petition reflects the abundant support standing behind the protesters inside College Hall, who are joined in solidarity by individuals across the Smith and Western Massachusetts communities.
By signing this petition, you stand with the College Hall occupiers’ right to freely protest and you support the demands for Smith to divest now. Divest from war, invest in peace.
