Sorry SeaWorld: Captivity is Becoming Extinct.

SeaWorld CEO Joel Manby & Other Captivity Industry CEOs

The question is not whether SeaWorld and other captivity facilities should stop keeping orcas, it’s when these changes will take effect.

We now know how much captivity harms orcas: it denies them their natural ability to swim 60 miles a day; it constrains their acoustic sense; it shortens their lifespans; and it breaks up family units including mothers and calves. Like humans, orcas want to be free to live out their lives with their loved ones in their natural oceanic home, rather than in an artificial, limited environment.

Captivity should be phased out, and we see a clear path towards this goal. We are therefore making 4 simple initial demands:

  1. Stop buying and selling orcas – they should not be treated as property!
  2. Stop the capture of orcas in the wild - from all oceans around the world!
  3. Stop orca performances – these are not educational, and in fact are a form of mis-education, particularly of our children.
  4. Retire, do not replace, aging orcas – because no one deserves to work until the day they die!

By signing this petition we are advocating for legislation to be passed that reflects these 4 points.
